Review of The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins Judith Starkston It’s Collins’s genius that he invests that one gleaming stone (“mere carbon,” as one character coolly reminds his more excitable friends) with enough snificance, and embeds it in enough drama, that no reader could find the abundant pother in ’s nearly 500 pages disproportionate.
